        History

        Sturgeon County encompasses the towns of Gibbons, Legal, Morinville, Redwater, and Bon Accord which lie north of Edmonton. The County covers over 2000 square kilometres of land and has been subject to periodic annexation due to the City of Edmonton’s growth since the 1960s. Major annexations of land from Sturgeon County occurred in 1961 (Clareview to Dikinsfield); 1971 (Castledowns and the Lake District); and 1982 (North East Edmonton).
