        History

The Sons of Norway Lodge in Edmonton, Alberta, officially known as Solglyt Lodge 4-143, was founded on March 1, 1918. Since its establishment, the lodge has been dedicated to celebrating and preserving Norwegian heritage. Over the decades, the lodge has hosted a variety of events and activities that highlight Norwegian traditions and foster a sense of community among its members. Some of the annual events hosted by Sons of Norway include Leif Erickson Day, Syttende Mai, Juletrefest, and Lutefisk dinners.

To promote the use and preservation of the Norwegian language and traditions, the lodge offers language classes, and craft and cultural workshops to members. Heritage programs for youth, including summer camps, heritage fairs, and educational trips, are hosted throughout the year to engage younger generations in Norwegian culture.

Within the Sons of Norway Lodge in Edmonton are two subgroups that add to the activities of the organization, Torskeklubben and the Sons of Norway Freeloaders. The Freeloaders are a musical ensemble who sing traditational Scandinavian folk music and provide entertainment at many Sons of Norway events. Torskeklubben, or the Cod Club, is dedicated to the appreciation of Norwegian cuisine, with a particular focus on cod dishes, a staple in Norwegian culinary tradition. Torskeklubben members gather monthly to enjoy traditional Norwegian meals, share recipes, and celebrate the rich culinary heritage of Norway. These gatherings often include storytelling, singing, and a festive atmosphere.
