Administrative history

In 1936 Sherman Maxwell Smith founded Smith's Ambulance Service. The company signed a contract with the City of Edmonton in 1953 and continued to provide ambulance services throughout the city. Mr. Smith passed away in 1975. The company was sold to the city in 1981, at which time the Edmonton Ambulance Authority was established.

Custodial history

It is not known how Betty Ross acquired the records. It is possible she is a descendant of Sherman Maxwell Smith or was an employee at Smith's Ambulance.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of a history of Smith's Ambulance Service, a biography of the founder of Smith’s Ambulance Service, Sherman Maxwell Smith, and several photocopied newspaper clippings relating to the company. The photographs include images of ambulances from the 1930s to the 1970s and various staff.
