Richard Scragg was born 2 Mar 1888 in Loughton Essex, England to Emma Jane Houghton and Ralph Scragg. He immigrated to Canada in 1908 and received a homestead grant in 1909, settling and farming in the Wainwright area. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in April 1916 and was assigned to the 202nd Battalion. He was appointed to Lance Corporal in December 1916 but reverted to ranks (private) in May 1917 at his own request. That month he went overseas with the 31st Battalion and served as a Lewis gunner. He was wounded in Passchendaele and sent to a war hospital in Chester, England. There he met nurse Ida Beatrice Brooks. He was granted permission to marry in September 1918 and discharged the following month.
Richard and Ida made their home in Edmonton and they had three children - Una, Marion and Richard. Richard worked for many years at Northern Box until his retirement in the 1960s.
Richard Scragg died 5 Oct 1972 in Edmonton.
Richard Scragg is the brother of Maria Scragg Stirling Roxburgh.
