History

Kenneth Gordon Newman was born in Hand Hills, Alberta August 29, 1917. He was a Councillor for the Town of Jasper Place between 1952 and 1957, then served as Mayor of Jasper Place from 1957 until the Town was annexed by the City of Edmonton in 1964. After annexation Newman won a seat on Council in 1964, but did not run in the 1966 election. In 1968 he ran for office again, and won a seat. He successfully ran for office four more times, serving as an Alderman for Ward 1 between 1971 and 1983, when he retired from municipal politics.

Newman was a member of the Development Appeal Board for nearly 16 years, and was a member of the Greater Edmonton Foundation and the Edmonton Exhibition Association. He also served as Chairman for the Royal Alexandra Hospital, President of the Edmonton Area Industrial Association, and President of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association.
