Name of creator
The District Names Advisory Committee was established in 1956 to recommend names for public spaces within the City of Edmonton. The Committee was composed of an alderman, a member of the Edmonton Public School Board, a member of the Edmonton Separate School Board, the Chairman of the Archives and Landmarks Committee, and a Town Planner with the Secretary consisting of the Street Addressing Coordinator. In 1969 it was renamed the Names Advisory Committee and, continuing to the present, has had its membership and responsibilities modified.
Scope and content
This series consists of six subseries:
Subseries 1: Indexes
This sub-series consists of the indexes of meeting minutes of the Names Advisory Committee (NAC). Researchers can use this sub-series as a finding aid for material in subseries 2.
Subseries 2: Meetings
This subseries contains all minutes and agendas of the NAC.
Subseries 3: Correspondence
- This subseries collects the NAC's letters to and from other committees as well as some letters regarding names research. Some neighbourhood structure plans were included as attachments.
Subseries 4: Names Reserve List
- Names added to this list were researched and vetted before being recommended to City Council.
Subseries 5: Reference Material
- This subseries consists of reference material the NAC gathered regarding potential names. Lists of named and unnamed lakes are also included in the subseries.
Subseries 6: Recommendations
- This subseries includes the recommendations the NAC made to City Council.
Immediate source of acquisition
This material was transferred to the City of Edmonton Archives from the Planning and Development Department and the Sustainable Development Department between 1996 and 2016. One accession was comprised of records found in the clippings files and moved to the series to better reflect its provenance.
The material was arranged by the archivist by function. Sub-series 1 (Indexes) were separated into their own sub-series in order to allow for easier identification of relevant meeting minutes. Sub-series 2 (Meetings) was collected into their own sub-series to allow for easier retrieval. Sub-series 3 (Correspondence) is a collection of the NAC’s letters to and from other committees as well as some letters regarding names research. Some neighbourhood structure plans were included as attachments, and therefore are part of this sub-series. Sub-series 4 (Names Reserve List) and Sub-series 6 (Recommendations) were primary functions of NAC and were therefore separated into their own sub-series.
