Edgar J. Millen was born 29 May 1901 in Belfast, Ireland to parents Hugh Rankin Millen (1864-1942) and Mary Margaret Millen (1874-1930). Edgar was the second of four children, and had two sisters (Annie and Christina) and one brother (John). The Millen family immigrated to Canada, and settled in Edmonton.
In 1920 Edgar Millen joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (service number 9669). He trained in Regina, and served in Winnipeg and Jasper before heading north to serve at Aklavik in 1924, Tree River in 1926, Artic Red River in 1927, and Cambridge Bay in 1928. He returned to Edmonton in 1930 and served in the city for a short period before returning to the north to take charge of the Artic Red River detachment.
Edgar Millen was shot and killed by Albert Johnson, aka The Mad Trapper on 30 Jan 1932 during a manhunt that lasted 48 days and made international headlines. His funeral was held in Edmonton and he was buried in Beechmount Cemetery. In 1961 a cairn was erected in his honour in the Northwest Territories at the site of his murder.
