Biographical history

Michael Alexander Kostek was born in 1926 in Poland and immigrated to Two Hills, Alberta with his parents in 1928. He moved to Edmonton to earn an education degree at the University of Alberta.

He joined the Edmonton Public School staff as a teacher in 1953 at Oliver Junior High School. He also taught at Ritchie and Hardisty Junior High Schools, and was principal at Lauderdale and Waverly Elementary Schools. He held positions of Junior High School Consultant, Director of Communications, Director of Administrative Staffing, and Executive Assistant to the Superintendent.

After retiring, Kostek became engaged in history. He was heavily involved in the restoration of McKay Avenue School and in the creation of the Edmonton Public Schools Archives and Museum. He also wrote "Looking Back: A Century of Education in Edmonton's Public Schools" in 1982, and published an undated version in 1992 called "A Century and Ten: A History of Edmonton Public Schools." The Michael A. Kostek School was named after him in 1995. Michael Kostek died in 2015.

Custodial history

The souvenir folder was donated to the Edmonton Public Schools Archives in 2023 by members of Michael Kostek's family.

Scope and content

This collection contains correspondence, ephemera, a copy of Kostek's book "Looking Back" on the history of Edmonton Public Schools, a photograph of Michael Kostek, and a souvenir folder of Edmonton scenes and buildings from the early 20th century.

Immediate source of acquisition

A number of items that had been collected by Archives staff and placed in the Michael A. Kostek clippings file were removed in 2024 and added to this collection. The book and photograph were donated in 1982 by Michael Kostek. The souvenir folder was transferred to the City of Edmonton Archives by the Edmonton Public Schools Archives in 2024.
