Biographical history

James H. Botz was born in 1892 in Michigan, U.S.A. He came to Edmonton in 1911. James lived at 557 Vermillion Ave and worked as a bookkeeper at the Sommerville Hardware Company Ltd. By 1913, he was no longer in Edmonton and had returned to the States. James H. Botz died in 1971 and is buried at the Edgewater New Smyrna Cemetery in Florida.

Custodial history

The photographs were passed down in the James H. Botz family until they came into the possession of the donor (likely a daughter-in-law), who sent them to the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce who forwarded the material to the archives.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of photographs of Edmonton taken by James Botz, including various buildings, river valley scenes, coal mines and possibly James H. Botz with friends or other Botz family members.

This fonds was donated to the City of Edmonton Archives by Mercedes L. Botz in 1998.

The photographs were arranged according to the filing system of the creator and assigned item numbers with the prefix EB-38.
