Fonds reflects the evolution of the Community and Family Services Department and the responsibilities it was tasked with during its existence. The textual records consist of: annual reports, statistics, financial statements, correspondence, policy statements, newsletters, minutes, photographs, forms, mission statements, lists of citizens, and other material. The original record order as found in 2016 has been retained, though an intellectual arrangement has been provided in the finding aid.
The fonds consists of photographs of the Mawhinney family, sports teams the Mawhinney’s were part of, the family home in Rossdale, the Arctic Ice Company, the Ross Flats clubhouse, the North Saskatchewan River, and damage from the 1915 flood.
The fonds consists of panorama photographs of banquets of local associations, including the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire, Independent Order of Foresters and Northern Alberta Pioneers & Old Timers Association Banquet. There is also a panorama photograph of the Westlawn Bowling Club. It is likely Nora’s parents were members of these associations.
The fonds consists of a Royal souvenir booklet "Coronation Souvenir of Our King and Queen with Princess Elizabeth & Princess Margaret Rose" (published by Sankey, Hudson & Co., Manchester, 1937), typed list of attendees to the Royal dinner held in Edmonton, 2 June 1939, and one copy of "Alberta Folklore, Vol. 1, No. 2", (published by the University of Alberta under the provisions of the Alberta Folklore and Local History Project, June 1945).
The fonds consists of administrative and financial records of the Alberta Pensioners' Society, including correspondence, scrapbooks of minutes, news clippings, legislative materials from various jurisdictions and other publications. The fonds consists of a photograph of Dr. A.H. Goodwin and family. Dr. Goodwin was the first dentist in Edmonton. Alexander Hooper Goodwin was born in 1968 to Elizabeth Wells and Cyrus Goodwin in New Brunswick. He married Selena (Lena) A. Taylor on 4 Jan 1898. By the following year, Alexander and Lena had settled in Edmonton and Alexander had established a dental practice on Jasper Ave. They had three children – Eleanor Beatrice, Lilian Alexandra, and William Taylor. Dr. Alexander Hooper Goodwin died 4 Mar 1964 in Edmonton.
This fonds consists of photographs of Edmonton and Alberta from the late 1800s and early 1900s from various well-known photographers, including Ernest Brown, C.W. Mathers, and others that were collected by the donor. The photographs include images of Legislators visiting towns in southwestern Alberta, as well as street scenes, businesses, and buildings in Edmonton.
The fonds also includes photographs taken by Bryce Van Dusen at his store, Acme Novelty Ltd., and during a tour of Churchill, Manitoba.
The collection consists of two group portrait photographs of students and teachers at the Edmonton High School. The school was located on 108th Avenue between 101 and 104 Streets and later became known as Victoria High School. One photo is of the Executive of the High School Literary Society which was a school club interested in literature and debating and also published a newsletter, The High School Topics. Robert H. Johnston is in both photographs.
The fonds consists of a postcard photograph of a horse and wagon plowing team and a book ‘Incidents in the Life of John S. Sullivan and other Famous People’ by William C. Burns (921.BUR). The book is the personal reminiscences of William Burns who was a prize fighter but in later years resided at the Selkirk Hotel and was often known to stand on the corner of Jasper Ave and 101 St., telling ‘interesting yarns’ about his prize fighting days. The publishing of the book was funded by donations of William Burns’ friends. It is possible Thomas Walsh contributed to the publishing of the book.
