Zoning Committee
CA EDM RG-17-17.16 · Série · 1961 - 1968
Parte de City of Edmonton. Planning Department fonds

The Zoning Committee was established in 1961 through the Zoning Bylaw (#2135). The Committee was an agent of City Council which acted in making administrative decisions regarding the uses of land and buildings in compliance with the provisions of the Zoning Bylaw. One function of the Committee was to hear appeals to decisions made by administration. The Committee was active only a few years: in 1966 a revised version of the Zoning Bylaw no longer included the Zoning Committee, and as early as 1963 it appears that City Council was responsible for hearing appeals.

This series contains a register of decisions to appeals heard by the Zoning Committee between November 1961 and August 1963, and by City Council between August 1963 and January 1968.

Zoning Appeal Board
CA EDM RG-17-17.14 · Série · 1936 - 1946
Parte de City of Edmonton. Planning Department fonds

While zoning appeals were first mentioned in 1931 (Bylaw 8-1931), it wasn’t until 1933 that the Zoning Appeal Board was formally established through Zoning Bylaw 26-1933. The Board consisted of five members of the public, appointed by Council, including a member of the Alberta Architects Association, a member of the Alberta Land Surveyors Association, and a member of the Edmonton Real Estate Association. The Board heard appeals from zoning decisions made by the Building Inspector. The Board was governed by the Zoning Bylaw, but in certain circumstances could make recommendations to Council for alterations to zoning boundaries. The Zoning Appeal Board operated until 1950, when the Interim Development Bylaw (Bylaw 1339) was created, which established the Interim Development Appeal Board, which in turn took appeals from any decision made by the Interim Development Officer, including issues of zoning.

The bulk of this collection consists of personal correspondence, newspaper clippings (some in Ukrainian), public relations material, legal contracts, and personal artifacts. Fifty photographs, originally found in the collection, have been removed and catalogued separately. The majority of the material in this collection was organized in annually labeled files in chronological order. Wherever possible, the original order of this collection was maintained. However, in some cases files with annual titles (e.g. 1940) were retitled according to content and class titles. It should be noted that while the title for this collection bears William Hawrelak's name, a large portion was produced by, or is related to the entire Hawrelak family. The early history in this collection contains material directly related to William Hawrelak's father, William Hawrelak senior. Mr. Hawrelak's wife, Pearl Porter, was also responsible for a large amount of the material generated in this collection. This fonds has been divided into the following Series or Classes:

  • Class 1: Early Family History records
  • Class 2: Personal records
