Y's Menettes Club. Edmonton Chapter fonds

The fonds consists of materials created or collected by the Edmonton Chapter of the Y's Menettes between 1951 and 1965. The fonds consists of photographs, bulletins, regional conference and Western District material and papers mostly relating to annual fundraising teas held and include the names of honoured guests, such as Mrs. Elmer Roper. There is also a scrapbook which includes additional photographs, a tea poster, bulletins, newspaper clippings, convention material and financial statements.

The fonds consists of records pertaining to the Kellet, Wankel, and Dornan families, St. Anthony's Parish and School, Strathcona, and the Catholic community in Edmonton.

Included in the records are Mary's family scrapbooks and the scrapbook-cum-manuscript, 'The First Fifty Years', covering life in early Strathcona and Edmonton, 1860-1991, predominantly 1890-1955.

The fonds also includes photographs of family, friends, St. Anthony School groups, and neighbours from the Strathcona area, and an album of photographs from the play 'The Lass of Limerick Town' presented by St. Anthony's choir and youth group for the church's 50th anniversary in 1955.

The fonds consists of correspondence and business papers of Cadillac Auto Livery Company, Sellick Bros. and Trudeau Auto Company and Trudeau Auto Co.; postcards to Aime Trudeau, a scrapbook created by Alice Trudeau relating to the French community news, French history, French society, French politicians and current events in Canada, and certificates of Denise Trudeau.
The books include Alberta Public School Geography (1925) (910 P c. 2); Arithmetic Book 1 and Book 2 by J. A. Smith (511 S); Dominion School Geography (910 D); Fashions of the Hour by Marshall Field and Co. (746 M); and One Hundred Short Sermons for the People on the Apostles' Creed Volume 1 by L. P. Gravel (252 G).
The photograph is of J.B. Taft, Canadian Government Land Guide, with a party of landseekers starting out for districts northwest of Edmonton [ca. 1905].

The fonds consists of the scripts for Harry Farmer’s television program “Sunday Visit” broadcast by CFRN-TV. The program highlighted the history of various churches in the Edmonton area. Each of the scripts begins: "The story of … Church as told by Harry Farmer, Producer of CFRN Television’s Sunday Visit Series". For a list of churches covered by the program scripts, see attached list.
The fonds also consists of photographs of the churches likely used in the show.

This series consists of issues of the Spare Change and Our Voice Newspapers. The first mention of Edmonton's Spare Change was in the March 1994 edition of Vancouver's Spare Change Newspaper, and the first issue of the Edmonton Newspaper being released in April 1994. The final issue was released in May 2005. Early editions were published by Martin Garber-Conrad, before becoming a co-production of the Bissell Centre, the Calgary Urban Project Society, and the Edmonton City Centre Church Corporation (E4C). The partnership lasted until 1997, at which point the papers were published by the Bissell Centre and E4C. By 1999 the sole published listed was the Bissell Centre.

The newspapers were envisioned as a way to provide an income to economically marginalized people while communicating their issues to the public. The publication provided a venue for stories relating to poverty and homelessness in Edmonton and to provide a voice for those who were largely ignored by the mainstream media. Other topics included topical news stories, and articles on prostitution, drug addiction, as well as profiles of members of the community. Licensed vendors would pay a small amount to cover the cost of publication and then sell the papers on the street for a donation.

Many people associated with the paper would play other important rolls in other areas of Edmonton ; editor Michael Walters became a City Councilor, writer Marjorie Bencz became Executive Director of the Edmonton Food Bank. Writer Jim Gurnett became Executive Director of the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers, writer Linda Numont went on to publish Edmonton Street News and Alberta Street News as well as being a lifetime housing advocate with the Edmonton Coalition on Housing and Homelessness.
