Part of Edmonton Social Planning Council fonds

The series consists of records related to the operational functions of the Edmonton Social Planning Council (E.S.P.C.) and its communications and interactions with external organizations. During the E.S.P.C.'s early years, it acted as a coordinating body for other social agencies, therefore the series includes records pertaining to the council's interactions with a wide variety of organizations, government offices and persons. These include the Canadian Welfare Council, Youth Services, The John Howard Society, University of Alberta, Canadian Mental Health Association in Alberta and the Edmonton School Board, along with many others. Records include correspondence, reports, minutes, news clippings, and reference documentation. Minutes include those from related organizations and councils that the E.S.P.C. worked with, as well as the various committees within the council. Some of the records including, newsletters, programs and bulletins, relate to external organizations, at local, provincial, national and international levels. These records provide context for the E.P.S.C's work and interactions with these external organizations.

The series also includes records pertaining to the United Community Fund of Greater Edmonton (formerly Community Chest) which merged with the E.P.S.C. in 1953 and early correspondence with Charlotte Whitton, who founded the Canadian Council on Child Welfare in 1920.

The fonds consists of photographs taken by John J. Chalmers of Fort Edmonton Park for the September-October 1973 issue of ATA Magazine. Also included in the fonds is a copy of the issue of ATA Magazine. The fonds also consists of 61 colour slides with images of downtown Edmonton and the River Valley and photographs of Fort Edmonton Park taken by John Chalmers.

Lillian Maze fonds

The fonds consists of the following:

  • File 1: Article titled 'The Big Hotel' by Lillian Maze about the Columbia Stopping House, which was published in the Edmonton Journal (1953) and formed the basis of an article published in the Spring 1964 edition of The Alberta Historical Review. There is also a souvenir booklet 'Souvenir of the Edmonton Schools - Issued at the Opening of the High School, May 9, 1911' (1911). The Edmonton High School was later known as Victoria School.
  • File 2: Painting by Lillian Maze's daughter and Edmonton Art Club member Kathleen Anne Elizabeth (Betty) Hickey titled "Columbia Stopping House". The building was located at the corner of Grierson (101A Avenue) and 96 Street. The painting was formerly described as EAA-66-1.

The photographs include EA-512-1: a portrait of Lillian Maze [ca. 1980] and EA-512: a photograph of Columbia House [ca. 1910].

This series consists of textual records pertaining to the Youth Services Division of the Edmonton Council of Community Services (currently Edmonton Social Planning Council). The series highlights the Division's work on welfare issues concerning children and youth in Edmonton beginning a year before its inception in 1955, to when it was absorbed into the Council in 1966. Some records pertain to the Council's continued work with youth after 1966. The series includes minutes, administrative records, correspondence with related organizations and persons, reports, bylaws, articles, clippings, directories and Council newsletters. The series also consists of records pertaining to the Division’s work in providing guidance, training courses, and hosting conferences related to child and youth welfare.

The fonds consists of materials collected, researched and created by the Mill Creek Build A Park committee in their efforts, activities and projects to protect, preserve and advocate for the Mill Creek ravine. It includes their research sources, documents and historical notes about the ravine and partners in the projects. Their projects include: the Mill Creek Crusade; Endangered Homes Project; “Mill Crick” and “Everybody’s Mill Creek” story approaches to the social history of Mill Creek ravine; “The Mill Creek Story”, formerly a series of 5 binders with slide/audio presentation for the purpose of developing environmental education in Mill Creek schools; and “It Really Works!”, a model for social action in environmental education in the classroom.

This series consists of a set of service profiles and their priorities created by the United Community Fund of Greater Edmonton. The profiles document social problems and areas of concern while highlighting potential solutions and challenges involved. They define the problem and its significance, list objectives, provide a program, document the volume of services already provided, identify gaps and redundancies in service delivery, effectiveness of service, projection of needs, and identifying patterns of financing for the service. This series is significant as it demonstrates the forward thinking and research conducted by the Community Fund in addition to how the fund prioritized its work and financing. The first file in the series also provides context for the codes used in the service profiles.
