The fonds consists of a history of the life of John Frances Grant compiled by William J. Nutt. The manuscript covers the time frame of John Grant's life, 1831-1907.

John F. Grant came from a Metis family who were active in the fur trade in Lower Canada and the Northwest from about the 1770s. John was born 7 Jan 1832 to Marie Ann Breland and Richard Grant in Fort des Prairies, later known as Fort Edmonton. His father, Richard "Handsome" Grant, was an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company at the time. John’s mother died when he was a toddler and he was sent to live with his grandmother and aunt in Quebec.

John Grant was educated at Trois-Rivieres, Quebec before joining his father who became chief factor at Fort Hall, Montana. John later worked as a trapper, trader and settler before returning to Canada. He eventually settled in Alberta and died in Edmonton in 1907.
