The series consists of daily journals, 1906-1918, 1937-1950, scrapbooks and recipe clipping books, 1945-1962 (one recipe book added to after her death), correspondence and other documents relating to her life, interests and activities.

Matthew McCauley Family

The series consists of family and business records of Matthew McCauley and his family. The family records include biographies on Matthew McCauley and his family. There are also family history narratives, family tree sheets, and some photocopies of photographs.

The business records are for Matthew McCauley’s butcher shop and cartage businesses. The ledgers list the daily transactions or general accounts of the businesses, which include the names of many (now well known) Edmonton families and the costs of the material, product or service provided (ex: hay, meat, livery, hauling and cartage).

The photographs include the first train across the North Saskatchewan River, Matthew’s children, and the First Presbyterian Church Choir.

Hannah Magee

The series consists of records pertaining to Hannah Magee, predominantly regarding her teaching career. Photographs include Hannah, the family home at 6422 – 106 Street, and other members of the Magee family.

Richard Henry Secord

The series consists of Richard Henry Secord’s daily journals, including event and financial notes, 1891-1928 (incomplete), and account books relating to various business activities, 1890-1919 (incomplete), and correspondence and other documents relating to his life activities and involvements. Some daily journals contain entries written by Richard’s wife, Annie York Secord

Assessment

The City Assessor's Department was responsible for raising the funds necessary for basic municipal services through the collection of taxes. The department assessed the value of businesses, land, real estate, and local improvements, maintained the records of tax assessments and payments for individual properties, and initiated action to collect overdue taxes.

This series contains records related to the assessment and collection of various municipal taxes. Aside from property taxes, the City also collected a service tax (essentially a municipal income tax), and a business tax, which was calculated as a percentage of the rental cost of certain business' commercial space or offices. When property taxes went into arrears, the City had the option of buying the property from the owner, or auctioning them off to collect taxes owed through tax sales.

An order has been imposed on the material. It includes the following four sub-series:

  • Subseries 2 - Business Tax Records
  • Subseries 3 - Service Tax Records
  • Subseries 4 - Arrears and Tax Sales

Administrative Records

This series contains records created through the administration of the Fire Department. The series has been divided into the following six subseries:
