Mayor and Council

This series consists of documentation investigating Edmonton's Mayor and Councilors regarding compliance with the Municipalities Act. These investigations include the Porter Royal Commission into civic mismanagement especially in regards to property speculation and profiteering by William Hawrelak, the Morrow Inquiry into bribing councilors including Aldermen Fallow and McLean, the disqualification of Mayor Hawrelak for violating the City Act in 1965, and the Nuclear Disarmament Referendum quashed by Mayor Purves. This series also includes the report of the form of City Government which proposed switching Edmonton to its current ward based system.

This item consists of a thematic finding aid compiling Local Histories in the City of Edmonton Archives Collection. There are many different publications which reveal some aspect of the histories and stories of Edmonton. There are general histories of Edmonton, neighbourhood histories, organization and business histories, biographies, monographs on buildings, cookbooks, collections of photographs and particular subject histories.

Development and Planning

This series of records is related to the Commissioners' role of overseeing all issues of land ownership within the City's limits. Residential and industrial development had to be managed and eventually planned for. Standards were required for buildings and construction and the resulting enforcement duties. This series contains the following subseries:

3.1 Land
This subseries includes records dealing with the purchase, sale, and management of land resources within the city, including subdivision of land, easements, urban renewal, future planning, and land sales, leases and purchases.

3.2 Zoning
This subseries consists of records relating to the restrictions placed on development and changes to that system over the years.

3.3 Architects and Inspections
This subseries consists of the records generated between the Architect's Department and the Commissioners, including records relating to the enforcement of building and zoning bylaws, including the management of civic office buildings (such as the Civic Block).

3.4 Economic Development
This subseries consists of the records relating to the promotion of the City for tourism, conventions and other special events to encourage economic development.

The coronation of George VI and his wife Elizabeth as King and Queen of the United Kingdom took place May 12, 1937. In preparation, a meeting was held by the City of Edmonton March 10, 1937 to discuss a suitable form of celebration for the occasion. The Edmonton Coronation Celebration Committee was thus established, charged with formulating the plans for the observance and celebration of the event. This series contains minutes, correspondence, and financial records of the Committee and it's various subcommittees.

This subseries consists of published copies of voters' and burgesses' lists produced from the original ledgers used to gather the information from districts across the City of Edmonton. The published copies amalgamate multiple districts into fewer ledgers, usually three to five, depending on the year. The published copies also incorporate any revisions or edits that may have been made to the information drawn from the original ledgers and were used as reference copies. They include information including the name, address, burgess status (i.e. if they owned property), and which school board they supported (Public of Separate).
