Orlando Books fonds

This fonds consists of the administrative records of Orlando Books, including invoices, rental agreements, correspondence, a visitor log book, newspaper clippings and records relating to the opening and closing of Orlando Books. Additionally, this fonds contains substantial records relating to Edmonton’s queer community, including the Vriend v. Alberta case, activism in Edmonton, the OK Awareness Campaign, the EPOCH project, and the development of the “Safe and Caring Schools for Lesbian and Gay Youth: A Guide for Teachers” pamphlet distributed by the Alberta Teachers Association. Also included in this fonds are a number of photographs, as well as newspaper clippings and articles about the bookselling and publishing industries.

This fonds consists of materials which were collected and created by the City's Commissioners through their function of overseeing all aspects of City administration. The fonds includes correspondence with City staff, provincial and federal representatives, other municipalities, corporations, community groups and the general public. It also contains reports and financial records relating to various departments, memoranda, committee minutes, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, photos, maps, and architectural drawings.

An order has been imposed on the material. The arrangement includes 13 series and multiple subseries. The series are as follows:

July 10, 1921 㸃城中國國民黨七周年紀念域多利公園野遊大會撮影 [Photograph of Edmonton Chinese National Party 7th anniversary picnic in Victoria Park]." Handwritten on the right of the photo reads: "荣日[黃]弟惠存"; this statement indicates that this photo was gifted to 荣日[黃]弟. Handwritten on the left of the photo reads: "愚[?]三贈"; this statement indicates who the photo was gifted by.

Photograph depicts members of the Chinese National League home defense militia in Edmonton. Inscription on the photo reads: "加拿大㸃問頓國民黨軍事社同人之撮影 Chinese National League Home Defense, Edmonton, Alta. Dec 19, 1915" Charles Yet Mah is seated in the front row, second from the right. The militia also include Ma Ziang and Huang Huilong, local Edmonton Chinese men who would later serve as Sun Yat-sen's bodyguards in China. Morris Cohen [Two-Gun Cohen] drilled the militia group, he is pictured seated in the front row, 10th from the right.

Photographs include Edmonton Pride parade, 1999-2005; Imperial Court of the Wildrose coronation events, 2000s; sports events; and drag performances, events and productions at various venues including the Roost, Boots, the Hellenic Hall.
