Departmental Records

This series consists of correspondence, minutes of meetings, and reports relating to the operation of the Business Development Department and its predecessors, and their interaction with other City departments.
This series has been divided into the following subseries:

  • Subseries 2.1: Departmental records
  • Subseries 2.2: Interdepartmental records

Council Minutes

This series consists of town council minutes for the Town of Jasper Place from the period of January 1950 to August 1964. It also contains committee reports, financial statements, and the results of various elections and plebiscites.

Bylaws

The main legislative tool available to the Town of Jasper Place was the creation of bylaws. The municipality issued bylaws from it's incorporation as a Village in January 1950 until its amalgamation with the City of Edmonton in 1964.

Tax Assessment Records

The assessment and collection of taxes for the provision of basic municipal services was done by the Town Assessor. This role was under the Secretary-Treasurer until at least 1958, though by 1962 the Assessor reported directly to Town Council. The Assessor completed a yearly survey of property owners and recorded the information in ledgers in order to set tax rates based on income.

This series consists of material related to the assessment of various municipal taxes. Each tax assessment sheet captures the name of the landholder and information pertaining to their income and property. The tax assessments were undertaken by neighborhood. A summary of assessment was created for the period of 1960-1964. The material has been placed in alphabetical order by neighborhood.

William Hawrelak

The series consists of correspondence, invitations, meeting minutes, reports, daily journals, and speeches from William Hawrelak's different terms of office.

An order has been imposed on the material. The arrangement includes three subseries, which are as follows:

  • Subseries 1: 1951-1959
  • Subseries 2: 1963-1965
  • Subseries 3: 1974-1975

Affiliated Organizations

This series contains records created by organizations that were affiliated with the Fire Department, including the Edmonton Fire Department Band, the Civil Defence Department, and the Western Canadian Insurance Underwriters' and Canadian Underwriters' Associations.

Address Coordination Committee

The Address Coordination Committee was tasked with solving issues born from the City of Edmonton's growth. The Committee's responsibilities include assigning new street and avenue numbers as well as coordinating new addresses for housing developments.

This series consists of material related to numbering streets in the City of Edmonton. While most of the content is correspondence, some plans for implementation are included.

Scrapbooks

From the 1950s through to the 1970s it was not unusual for City departments to keep scrapbooks as a record of their activities. This series contains 34 scrapbooks of newspaper clippings relating to the business of the City of Edmonton, and specifically the Planning Department.
