Walter Scott Robertson fonds
CA EDM MS-44 · Fonds · 1899 - 1905

The fonds consists of invoices and receipts from various businesses in account with W.S. Robertson for Robertson Hall.

Robertson Hall, sometimes called Edmonton Opera House, was located on the south side of east Jasper Ave, at approximately 9671 Jasper Avenue, across from the Jasper House Hotel and Mathers’ Photograph Studio. The building was a two-storey frame structure, 45 feet x 65 feet. It had a large cellar, two shops on the main floor with the large hall on the second floor. The hall was entered via a five foot wide stairwell, seated 300 to 350 people, and featured an 18 foot stage with dressing rooms on either side.

Robertson’s Hall was used for a variety of events including town meetings and receptions, dances, musical and dramatic performances, concerts, political debates, charitable events, and variety shows. Robertson himself managed the hall for many years, until Neville White was hired as manager in 1899.

Robertson’s Sheriff office was located in Robertson Hall for many years. Later, Robertson’s son Frederick M. Robertson had a Provisions, Flour and Feed shop in the second office.

Robertson Hall is considered as Edmonton’s first theatre or venue and was in regular use until it burned down on May 23, 1906.

Cahill, Florence Jean
CA EDM MS-138 · Fonds · 1892 - 1954

The fonds consists of sheet music, and a family album of postcards and greeting cards.

The majority of sheet music belonged to Christina Charters, most of which is annotated, C.J. Cavers, while others are annotated C.J. Charters, or Mrs. E. Charters. Some of the earlier pieces of sheet music are annotated M.B. Cavers, likely Christina's sister Mary Beatrice Cavers. A few pieces of music have other annotations, such as U.Y or Mrs. Young - it is not known who this is, or how related to Christina Cavers Charters.

The album of postcards and greeting cards covers multi-generations of the Cavers - Charters family. The early postcards are predominantly addressed to Everett Charters as a child ('Master Everett') or his parents, Maggie and Charles Charters. The cards are mostly from Charters or Everett relatives back in New Brunswick (Aunt Nell, Aunt Sadie, Grandma, Grandpa, Mother) and presumably sent after the family moved to Saskatchewan. Some postcards have notes or writings from the sender, others are blank. Other cards are addressed to Chrissie Cavers, before her marriage to Everett Charters.

Cards in the middle to later part of the album are addressed to Everett or Chrissie Charters, and later to their children, Kenneth or Marion. The cards are mostly from friends or relatives, and are predominantly greeting cards with some birth or memorial announcements.

It is not known if the creator of the album was a Charters family member, and Christina inherited the album upon her marriage to Everett, and continued it, or if Christina herself created the album and included cards that belonged to her or her husband prior to their marriage, as well as cards received by them once married.

Burrill, Field Family fonds
CA EDM MS-340 · Fonds · 1885 - 1942

The fonds consists of sheet music belonging to various members of the Burrill and Field famiilies, but mostly Emerson L. Burrill and his wife, Myrtle I. Field Burrill.

Most pieces are annotated with initials or signatures: E.L. Burrill, E.L.B., Myrtle Field, M.I Field, or M.I. Burrill. A few pieces, annotated Ethel L. Field, are assumed to belong to Myrtle's sister, Ethel Louella Field.

Other pieces have no initials, signatures or annotations. It is possible, perhaps likely, that these pieces belonged to Violet S. Field.

The music is mostly sacred and spiritual, but also includes popular and patriotic works.

Note: the annotation on some Burrill pieces appears as if it could be E.S. Burrill. However it is suspected to be a short-hand fancy script for E.L. Burrill. The handwriting is identical and there are no other Burrill family members with the initials 'E.S.'.
