The fonds consists of two programmes and one news clipping of the Empire Theatre which opened in 1920 on 103 Street just north of Jasper Avenue. It operated as Edmonton's premier theatre until it was converted into offices during the Second World War. Its lifespan was roughly coincidental with the golden age of drama, opera, and vaudeville. Stars such as Harry Lauder, Charlie Chaplin, and Will Rogers were among the performers. The building was used not only as a playhouse but also for political gatherings, sports broadcasts, and city theatrical productions. The fonds consists of materials collected, researched and created by the Mill Creek Build A Park committee in their efforts, activities and projects to protect, preserve and advocate for the Mill Creek ravine. It includes their research sources, documents and historical notes about the ravine and partners in the projects. Their projects include: the Mill Creek Crusade; Endangered Homes Project; “Mill Crick” and “Everybody’s Mill Creek” story approaches to the social history of Mill Creek ravine; “The Mill Creek Story”, formerly a series of 5 binders with slide/audio presentation for the purpose of developing environmental education in Mill Creek schools; and “It Really Works!”, a model for social action in environmental education in the classroom.
The fonds consists of correspondence, meeting minutes and supporting documents, reports and legislation relating to the Steering Committee, Foundation of Cultural Heritage and the Edmonton Community Foundation, 1970-1971. The fonds consists of personal papers and business records of some members of the McCauley family, including Matthew McCauley, his children Alexander James Henry McCauley and Julia Alberta McCauley Norquay, and his grandson William Alexander McCauley. There are also records of Matthew’s brothers Samuel and Alexander.
