Election Scrapbooks (1918-1963)

The City Clerk's Department was established August 20, 1912 by Bylaw 425, which stated in part that the City Clerk was responsible for performing all duties required in regard to municipal and school elections and the voting of the burgesses upon referred bylaws. In 1964 the City Clerk ceased to be responsible for municipal elections and censuses. A position of Returning Officer was created within the City Clerk's Department, which took on the responsibility for elections.

This series includes 14 scrapbooks divided into different themes.

Office of the City Clerk (1935-1972)

This series includes correspondence relating to municipal elections, personnel, the development of parks and recreational facilities, planning, and the proposed Civic Centre/Omniplex. There are also small amounts of material related to finances, utilities, housing, welfare and social services, and the police and fire departments. This series was divided into 177 Classes.

Contracts

This series includes certified copies of agreement between the corporation of Edmonton and various other parties. This series also includes agreements made by the Town of Strathcona between 1899 and 1909.

Joseph & Alice Webb

The series consists of textual records and photographs of Joseph and Alice Webb. The photographs predominantly reflect Joseph's military career.

The textual records include:

  • Joseph Webb’s military service records, 1906-1919;
  • marriage certificate for Joseph Webb and Alice Beatrice Miller, 1910;
  • greeting cards, 1915-1916;
  • national ration books for Joseph, Alice and Ellen Webb, 1918-1919;
  • notices of issue of service medals, 1920;
  • national registration certificate for Joseph Webb, 1940.

Reference Collections

This series contains resources that were created by the City of Edmonton Archives as a means of responding to frequent reference requests. It includes the following two documents:

  • A binder of photos of Mayors, Aldermen, and Councillors (324.9 PHO). It contains copies of photographs from our collection and the collection of other archives, ranging from 1892 to the early 2000s.
  • An annotated document called "Municipal elections in Edmonton, 1892-1998 : summary of results with short mayoral and aldermanic biographies" originally created by Joseph Rek (324.9 REK 1998).

Photographs

This series consists of photographs documenting the work of the Parks and Recreation Department. Photos numbered EA-20 include images of civic properties, leisure programs, special events, sports, green spaces such as boulevards and parks, and City staff. It also includes a photographic inventory of several thousand images of schools, community halls, playgrounds, pools, parks, and facilities from around 1968. Photos numbered ET-28 were created as a slide library to be used by staff in presentations.
