Bylaws

This series consists of records documenting Law's involvement with Edmonton's bylaw process. It includes documents regarding Law's involvement in challenges of bylaws of historic significance, including the Lord's Day Act Bylaw allowing businesses to operate on Sundays, Carruthers Caveat restricting development in Glenora, dumping sewage into the North Saskatchewan river, the taxi bylaw and the change to taxis being solely functional via a dispatcher office, and the business license bylaw and how it applies to various types of massage clinics. The remainder of the series involves bylaws regarding the closure of roadways and alleyways for construction projects and parks including Keillor Road, and the funding of construction projects.

This series contains reports that were processed and described as part of the Government Reports library, and includes annual reports and other material created by the Edmonton Fire Department. It also contains numerous reports collected by the Fire Department in the course of their operations, which were subsequently transferred to the City of Edmonton Archives. Departments that are represented include the Bylaw Enforcement Department, the Computer Systems Development and Services Department, the Corporate Studies Office, the Edmonton Municipal Airport, Edmonton Power, the Edmonton Public Library, edmonton telephones, Edmonton Transit, the Engineering Department, the Finance Department, the Local Board of Health, the Management Services Department, the Office of the Auditor General, the Office of the City Clerk, the Office of the City Commissioners, the Parks and Recreation Department, the Personnel Department, the Planning Department, the Police Department, the Public Relations Department, the Public Works Department, the Real Estate and Housing Department, the Real Estate and Supply Services Department, the Safety Department, and the Water and Sanitation Department. It includes meeting minutes from numerous committees, reviews of the various community programs run by nursing staff, and training material and educational resources used by nursing staff. This series consists of records created as the City of Edmonton expanded their boarders to annex surrounding lands and communities. It includes records of the Royal Commission on Metropolitan Development (the McNalley Commission), annexation and attempted annexations of Strathcona County, Jasper Place, Riverbend, and St. Albert. It also includes records regarding major city lead developments such as the Downtown Pedestrian Circulation System, the Mill Creek Ravine, the Aurum Dump, Borden Park, Kinsmen Sports Centre, and the Genesee Power Plant. This series also includes blueprints of City Developments including buildings such as City Hall, parks, roads, and transit developments.

This series contains material relating to Edmonton Power's communications directly to the public through various publications. It contains examples of mass-produced publications intended to educate citizens about the department and the creation and use of electricity. It also contains samples of artwork and production proofs used to create the publications, as well as photos taken by the department to illustrate said publications.

Allan Bolstad

This series consists of records related to the proposed privatization of ED Tel in 1994. The records include correspondence, a memorandum, presentations, proposals, and notes relating to different options. The material was used by Allan Bolstad in his capacity as a City Councillor.

The Edmonton Telephones Corporation (ED Tel) was created in 1990 as a result of the provincial Telecommunications Act, which allowed municipalities to provide telecommunications services and products through a wholly-owned subsidiary corporation, but not through a City department. In early 1994 the outgoing ED Tel President publicly raised the idea of selling the utility. Ultimately the Edmonton Telephones Corporation was sold to Telus on March 10, 1995 for $470,221,872.
