This series consists of the publications of the Old Strathcona Foundation as well as the publications of other institutions that formed the Foundation’s research library. The newsletters of the Foundation, as well as their longer-form periodical, the Strathcona Plaindealer, are included here. The Foundation also collected reports and publications from other institutions such as the City of Edmonton in an effort to advocate for the preservation of Old Strathcona’s history prior to amalgamation in 1912.

This series consists of documents related to the regular operation of the Foundation. Included in this series are minutes and agendas of the Board of Directors and various committees that reported to the Board, incorporation records, bylaws and their amendments, financial statements, budgets, annual general meetings including annual reports, correspondence, and other documents pertaining to the larger operation of the Foundation. The documents in this series have been arranged to roughly correspond to their subject matter. For example, files related to the Princess Theatre’s operation are grouped together though there may be some documents with higher file numbers to reflect later accruals to the collection.

It also contains special reports delivered to the City Council in the early-to-mid 1900s on a variety of topics, including utilities and development. It also includes special investigations into issues such as fires, conflict of interest, and prostitution.

This series contains material relating to the operations and activities of the Garneau Planning Committee. Founded in 1975, the Planning Committee was concerned with urban planning and development in the Garneau neighbourhood. The Committee successfully fought against several high-rise developments in the area. The Committee also communicated with various City of Edmonton departments regarding topics such as zoning, parking, infrastructure, and expansion of the University of Alberta. The committee was also heavily interested in maintaining the historic character of the Garneau neighbourhood. Records include minutes, correspondence, redevelopment plans, reports, court appeals, site plans, research material, and legal documents. Also included are some material relating to the Community League proper such as minutes and correspondence.

Information is included on numerous issues around achieving equitable rights for Edmonton’s (and more broadly Alberta’s) gay community, and the series is extensive in the range of gay and lesbian civil and human rights detailed. The textual material includes correspondence, meeting documents, newsletters, briefs and prepared submissions and presentations, and many news clippings and published article references.
