The fonds consists of some records and biographical clippings of Richard Ottewell and the Ottewell family as well as correspondence and records of Jennie (Ottewell) Smith and her husband Bliss Simith.
There are also books in algebra, geometry, mechanics and mechanical drawing from the American School of Correspondence, likely used by Bliss Smith for correspondence courses as well as a garden seed and nursery catalogue:
The photographs are of Richard and Fanny Ottewell and their children, including Richard and Fanny Ottewell on their 50th wedding anniversary (1927), as well as the Clover Bar School.

The album consists of photographs predominantly of northern Alberta and into the Northwest Territories, though some are of Cooking Lake and Edmonton Beach, Alberta.

Newspaper clipping - Freddy L. Fraser (MS-1195, f. 1)
The newspaper clipping is an obituary for Frederick Lawrence (Freddy) Fraser, grandson of Colin Fraser (Jr.), and great grandson of Colin Fraser (Sr.).

Colin Fraser (Sr.) came to Canada originally as a piper for Sir George Simpson, Governor-in-Chief of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), for Simpson's 1828 trek across Canada and Rupert's Land reviewing each of the HBC forts. The following year he was assigned to HBC York Factory and over the next 25 years worked at various HBC forts becoming an accomplished fur trader. Colin Fraser (Sr.) married Nancy Beaudry and they had 12 children - Betsy, Isabella, Marguerite, Ann, John, Annabella, Flora, Simon, Colin, J. Henry, Adelaide and Caroline.

Colin Fraser (Jr.), son of Nancy Beaudry and Colin Fraser (Sr.), was also an accomplished fur trader, eventually settling in Fort Chipewyan where he had a store and post office. Colin Fraser (Jr.) married Flora Rowland and they had six children - James, Maria, Lovisa, Colin W. (Roderick), Frederick and Mary Jane.

Freddy Fraser, was born 11 Feb 1911 in Fort Chipewyan, to Eliza Jane Loutit and Colin W. (Roderick) Fraser. Freddy left school at a young age to work with his grandfather (Colin Fraser Jr.) hauling furs and freight in northern Alberta. He later hauled mail and freight by dog teams to Yellowknife from mines in the Canadian north. In World War II, Freddy enlisted in the Seaforth Regiment, CEF, and saw action in Italy and the Mediterranean. After the war, Freddy Fraser joined the Wood Buffalo National Park Service, eventually as warden from 1947 to 1952. Freddy retired in 1971, eventually moving to Edmonton. Frederick L. Fraser died 17 Apr 1982 in Edmonton.

Photo Album (EB-31)
There is very little information about the photo album and only a few of the photographs are annotated. However, those annotations include Jim Fraser, and Royal Nothwest Mounted (RNWMP) Police officers - Inspector Joy, Inspector Phillips, Corporal Doak, and Corporal Clay.

A group of photographs in the album are of Sinnisiak and Uloqsaq (Uluksak, Uluksuk) at Fort Resolution, most likely after their trial in Edmonton and Calgary in 1917 for the murder of two priests. The photographs include Sinnisiak, Uloqsaq as well as witness Koeha, interpreter Ilavinirk (Iiavinik, Ilavinik), interpreter Patsy Klengenberg, Crown counsel Charles C. McCaul, defense counsel James Wallbridge, Inspector Joy and an unidentified RNWMP officer.

There are also photographs of a RNWMP North Patrol with a dog team en route to Herschel Island, possibly after being at Fort Resolution visiting Sinnisiak and Uloqsaq. These photographs include Inspector Joy, Inspector Phillips, Constable Doak, Constable Clay, Mrs. Clay, Mrs. King, Mrs. Anderson, and 'self' (who may be the original creator/owner of the album).

Some of the other photographs in the album (not annotated) are of unknown people, but likely family members, possibly of the Colin Fraser (Jr.) family. These may include Colin Fraser (Jr.) and his trading post at Fort Chipewyan, his son Jim Fraser, and Jim's dog sled team, as well as possibly Colin's daughter, Mary Jane Fraser.

Mary Jane Fraser married Arthur H.L. Mellor, a RNWMP officer, who was often on northern patrols early in his career.

There is one gentleman common to many of the photographs however his identity is not known. For description purposes and to show the connection between the photographs, he has been described as Mr. X.

It is not known for certain who the album belonged to, however, given the newspaper clipping and the photographs are of activities in the far north (Alberta, NWT and Yukon) including RNWMP, it is possible the album belonged to a Fraser family member, perhaps Mary Jane Fraser Mellor, or Jim Fraser.

This fonds consists of the administrative records of the Jazz City Festival Society, including year-end financial statements, grant applications, venue and musician contracts, musician immigration and payment records, sponsorship correspondence and contracts, volunteer reports, and many festival planning documents. Additionally, this fonds contains press coverage from Jazz City, Jazz City programs, and several records relating to the promotion of Jazz City including t-shirts, posters, pins, and felt patches. Also included are photographs of artists and the festival, as well as VHS tapes with interviews and advertisements for Jazz City.

The fonds consists of records of James Taylor’s military career:

  • a notice of parade for the Winnipeg Rifles, 90th Regiment, “A” Company, 1900;
  • a Certificate of Discharge from the Winnipeg 90th Rifles, March 2, 1901;
  • a one-page hand written personal account of James W. Taylor's time in South Africa, 1901-1902 (includes place, date and notes).
  • 7 pages of typewritten accounts from James W. Taylor's diary in South Africa from February 24, 1902 to June 1, 1902; Certificate of Discharge from the South African Constabulary, February 21, 1903;
  • a pass from the South African Constabulary, 1903;
    The photographs are also from James Taylor’s military carrier and include Canadian troops in South Africa.

The fonds consists of a photograph of the Officers of the 49th Battalion, Edmonton Regiment taken one day after the armistice of WWI (November 11, 1918).
The 49th Battalion, Edmonton Regiment, CEF, was authorized in November 1914 under the command of Lt. Col. W.A. Griesbach and embarked for England in June 1915. The troops went to France in October 1915, where they fought as part of the 7th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Canadian Division in France and Flanders until the end of the war. The battalion was disbanded September 1920.

The fonds consists of records collected by James Valleau, presumably once living in Edmonton. They relate to different events in Edmonton, often prior to James' own birth or living in Edmonton. As such, his relation to the documents is uncertain. It is assumed that Valleau collected them in pursuit of an interest in the history of the city. The records are divided into three main topics - the Edmonton Industrial Association and its 1914 promotional trip, 'The Edmonton Spirit'; the early theatrical scene in Edmonton; and miscellaneous.

Edmonton Industrial Association
The Edmonton Industrial Association, which operated under the aegis of the Edmonton Board of Trade, was created to promote Edmonton and industrial opportunities to a wider national and international audience. In June 1914, a two week promotional train excursion named 'Edmonton Spirit' was made from Edmonton to Toronto, with stops in Winnipeg, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago, Detroit, Stratford and Guelph. The train journey was interspersed with civic receptions and tours of local facilities. Among the passengers were some of Edmonton's leading businessmen. A twice-daily newsletter was published each day of the journey.

The records include itineraries, notes, articles, newsletters, announcements and accounts of the 'Edmonton Spirit' train excursion. There are also two panorama photographs of the excursion participants, taken in Winnipeg and Milwaukee.

Theatrical Programmes
The theatrical programmes include material that was originally created by Kenneth A. Ross. Mr. Ross came to Edmonton from Ontario around 1913 and appears to have had ambitions of being a concert impresario. He was manager or presenter of some concerts in 1916. Then in 1917, Ross, with the cooperation of the Edmonton Women's Musical Club, arranged the 'Edmonton Concert Series', to be held in the 1917-1918 season, and produced a brochure with biographies of the upcoming performers in order to promote sales.

In 1920, Ross was promoted to manager of the Musical Merchandise Sales Co., who was the Canadian distributor of Brunswick phonographs. However in 1923, Ross was convicted in Calgary of the theft of 133 gramophones from the McLaran Gramophone Corp. of Stratford, Ontario, and sentenced to three years in the Prince Albert penitentiary.

The theatrical records of Kenneth A. Ross include handbills, programmes including the brochure for the 'Edmonton Concert Series' produced by Mr. Ross, photographs and album. The photographs, most of which are in the photo album, are portraits of several of the concert performers, many with salutations addressed to Kenneth A. Ross or his wife. The Ross theatrical records also include a handbill for a play, 'The Temple of Fame', in which both Kenneth Ross and his wife are listed as performers. Accompanying the handbill is a handwritten document, 'Red Cross Nurse', which is likely the script for Mrs. Ross' address in the play.

There are also other theatrical programmes that are likely not associated with Kenneth Ross as they are for concerts either before his arrival in Edmonton, or after his 1923 conviction. It is not known if these programmes were originally used by Valleau, or by someone else and collected by Valleau.

Miscellaneous Material
The miscellaneous material includes a commencement programme for the Misericordia Hospital School of Nursing, an advertisement for Thompson & Dynes women's wear shop in Edmonton, and newspaper clippings.

This fonds consists primarily of architectural drawings, including plans, sections, elevations, floor plans, electrical layouts, and sketches (of both home exteriors and design features). Included are original and copied plans and drawings. The drawings reflect all aspects of Stephens' career, but the bulk of the material is from his 1968 incorporated company, James N. Stephens Limited. A few textual records and photographs are also included, relating to both Stephens’ own company and his work with G. W. Golden Construction.
The Stephens fonds were with the family until it was donated to the City of Edmonton Archives, and most of the material had been stored rolled for many years. While all attempts were made to discern original order, much of the material was loose, and lacked identifiers such as dates, clients’ names, or project addresses. In some cases the plans were generic, and meant to be built where a client lot was purchased. The material was arranged according to the following five series:

Series 3: Christenson Homes
Series 4: James N. Stephens Ltd.
Series 5: Unidentified drawings
As mentioned, it is not always possible to determine who or when (or where) a plan was created. There is a lot of material that was completed without dates, locations, or Company logos. When no information about the company could be determined, the plans were moved to series 5.
The fonds remained in James Stephens’ possession until his death in 1993, and was donated to the City of Edmonton Archives on behalf of the family by Alison Stephens, James’ daughter-in-law.
