Amos Skinner fonds

The fonds consists of a collection of historical sketches on the Riverdale area created by Amos Skinner. It includes lists of street names in Riverdale and of Principals at Riverdale School.
The records include references to Mr. D.B. Fraser, Fraser’s Mill and Mr. J.B. Little.
The community of Riverdale is located along the North Saskatchewan River. Settlers arriving in the 1880s were quick to develop this large flat area, which was just one mile downstream from Fort Edmonton. One of the first arrivals was Daniel Robert Fraser, who started a flour and sawmill in the flats in 1881. The area became known as Fraser Flats until the community changed the name to Riverdale in 1910.

The fonds consists of political papers relating to Dr. Roper's tenure as Mayor of Edmonton from 1959 to 1963.
The photographs are from an album, presented to Elmer Roper by Chief Constable M.F.C. Anthony, commemorating the official opening of Police Headquarters Building, October 16, 1962.
The textual material was arranged as follows:

  • Speeches, includes proclamations, briefings and other statements.
  • General Correspondence, containing invitations and acknowledgements; complaints and compliments, and general commentaries on civic business; also includes files created by his immediate predecessors as mayor, William Hawrelak, mayor until his resignation in September 1959 and F.J. Mitchell, acting mayor until the municipal election in October 1959.
  • Miscellaneous Papers, including new clippings, reports, and incidental documents

The fonds consists of postcard greeting cards, predominantly Christmas but also Best Wishes, military (“He Served His Country’) and New Year’s. Also includes two lacquer-finished postcards of drawings of Sussex, England countryside.
The records include references to Dorothy Kendall Willmore Quehl, Norman Willmore, John (Jack) Willmore, and Dr. Eby Quehl.
The photograph is a postcard of the Edmonton City Dairy with the milk bottle on the roof.

The photographs include family members, the Johnston home and automobile.
The books include the 'Gold Medal Flour Cookbook', 1910 (641.5 WAS) and 'The Eugene Field I Knew', by Francis Wilson, 1898 (811.4 WIL).

The fonds consists of a copy of "Courrier-Sud", Sept. 5, 1972, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the order's presence at Nicolet, Quebec, a copy of "Le Franco-Albertain”, Oct. 10, 1973, which contains an article on the Lamoureux family, and a dedication booklet of "La Congregation Des Souers de l'Assomption de la Sainte Vierge", 1974.
The photographs include Assumption Academy, convent and chapel at St. Joachim, Ecole Sacre Coure, Immaculate Conception church and rectory, and sisters with children at Hobbema.

There are also photographs of some members of the Cahill and O’Callaghan families, including Cliff Cahill (a cousin from the United States who was killed in action in France, 1918), Everett Cahill (a cousin in the UK Royal Flying Corps in 1917), and Walter O’Callaghan’s parents, Bridget and Edward O’Callaghan.
