The Edmonton Telephones Corporation (ED Tel) was created in 1990 as a result of the provincial Telecommunications Act, which allowed municipalities to provide telecommunications services and products through a wholly-owned subsidiary corporation, but not through a City department. In early 1994 the outgoing ED Tel President publicly raised the idea of selling the utility. Ultimately the Edmonton Telephones Corporation was sold to Telus on March 10, 1995 for $470,221,872.

Fait partie de City of Edmonton. City Architect and Building Inspector's Department fonds

The Architectural Panel was created in 1950 as part of the Interim Development Appeal Bylaw (#1339). The Panel was appointed by Council to consider and advise the Interim Development Officer on applications to display signs, billboards, or advertising devices on land or buildings, as well as to advise upon architectural control throughout the City. The Panel was chaired by the City Architect and had representatives from other departments as well as members of the community. All applications relating to signs or which, in the opinion of the Development Officer, involved a degree of architectural control (i.e. exterior design and aesthetic considerations), were referred to the Panel. Upon the Panel's recommendation the Officer could approve applications in whole, approve them subject to certain changes, or reject them. Unsuccessful applicants could take their case to the Interim Development Appeal Board.

The Board of Examiners and Appeals From the City of Edmonton Building Code was established in 1935 through the Edmonton Building Code Bylaw (#781). The Board was responsible for determining the suitability of alternate materials and means of construction and providing reasonable interpretation of the Building Code. By the mid-1950s the Board was also hearing appeals from decisions of the Building Inspector as they related to the Building Code. Issues would be forwarded to the Board via a City Commissioner or by the Building Inspector. The decisions of the Board were final. The Board was appointed by Council, and consisted of members who were knowledgeable about building practices. By the 1950s this included the Fire Marshall and representatives of the Edmonton House Builder's Association, the Edmonton Builder's Exchange, the Alberta Architect's Association, and the Association of Professional Engineers of Alberta.
