Margaret McFarlane fonds

The fonds consists of Margaret McFarlane’s red leather cover autograph album 1890-1892, inscribed “Miss Margeurite McFarlane”, and includes various quotes, sayings and signatures by Margaret’s family, friends and acquaintances. The album shows a variety of styles of handwriting and calligraphy, as well as Margaret’s travels throughout northern and central Ontario, including Lion’s Head, Singhampton, Pinkerton, Walkerton, Blyth, Clinton and Fairview.
The back cover of the album is annotated ‘Jessie Armstrong 10 years, 1916’. So it is possible Jessie Armstrong also used the album.

Pollard Family fonds

The fonds consists of documents relating to the history of the Pollard Brickyard and John Walter logging operation in Walterdale. Also included is a photocopy of a notebook with a handwritten account of the history of the Bedard family and recipes compiled by Firmin Bedard. The photographs are of the Pollard brickyard and a family group photograph of the Pollards and Bedards.

The fonds consists of two programmes and one news clipping of the Empire Theatre which opened in 1920 on 103 Street just north of Jasper Avenue. It operated as Edmonton's premier theatre until it was converted into offices during the Second World War. Its lifespan was roughly coincidental with the golden age of drama, opera, and vaudeville. Stars such as Harry Lauder, Charlie Chaplin, and Will Rogers were among the performers. The building was used not only as a playhouse but also for political gatherings, sports broadcasts, and city theatrical productions.
Note: both programmes include a variety of advertisements of local businesses of the time, including full page ads for Swift’s on the inside front covers.
