Discrete Items

This series includes material created at City Hall for ceremonial purposes, such as guest books; material relating to the City’s corporate identity such as flags, a tartan, and a City crest; and documents meant to raise awareness such as proclamations. It also includes discrete items relating to specific special events and miscellaneous reports collected by the department.

The material in this series is not part of a particular business unit, function, or Committee for which we have records. Since nothing else exists at present to contextualize the material, it has been described as a series of discrete items.

Heritage Planning

These records were created by the Heritage Planning Unit through their function of identifying and preserving historical buildings in Edmonton. The records include reports, publications, walking tours, correspondence, and operational files relating to the preservation of historical properties, including projects such as heritage surveys and inventories.

The series includes a full run of neighbourhood fact sheets documenting communities in Edmonton in the late 1980s and early 1990s (files 55-245). Also included are files containing information and correspondence around buildings of interest (files 296-1438), and buildings which have been demolished or moved from their original location (files 1590-1684).

Files 1685-1975 are designation files, and include information and correspondence related primarily to the conservation of properties which have been formally designated as Municipal Historical Resources.

Many files listed in the file list contain photographs documenting buildings.

Corporate Newsletters

On March 5, 1976 the first City of Edmonton Employee Publication was released by the Public Relations Department as a means of communication between all City of Edmonton employees. It provided information on what was happening in the different departments; topics of general interest; and on personal events such as births, marriages, retirements, and deaths. Contents were solicited from all City employees and then selected by the editor H. L. Pawson (also the Public Relations Director).

Between July 1976 and December 1983, the publication was called Mainstream. Starting in January, 1984, the publication was changed in reaction to the economic downturn. Now called Ministream, it was smaller (and cheaper to produce), and came out bi-weekly rather than only ten times a year. Ministream provided factual reports of major events in Civic life with a focus on how they affected employees, but also included cartoons, photographs, guest editorials, benefits updates, and a classified section. Ministream also began running articles that dealt with social issues affecting employees, such as domestic violence, HIV and AIDS, and famine overseas.

January 18, 1991 was the debut issue of City LINK, which replaced Ministream. Similarly, City LINK was a timely, cost-effective news service for employees. City LINK was bi-weekly until September 1995, when it became a monthly publication.

In February 2014 greatcitynews quietly replaced City LINK. greatcitynews was distributed monthly and provided news on civic plans, policies and programs; corporate and individual work-related achievements, and employee learning and development, benefits, health, safety, and fitness. The last print issue of greatcitynews was published December 2015, after which time it was only available electronically.

This series contains copies of Mainstream, Ministream, City LINK, and greatcitynews.

Reports

This series contains annual reports from the Power Plant Department, the Water Supply and Purification Plant, Edmonton Generation and Water Treatment, Edmonton Power, Water and Sanitation, and Environmental Services. It also contains power supply reports, statistical reports, feasibility studies, and reports about the Rossdale Power Plant. There are also a number of reports from the Edmonton Power Library which were created by other areas, including the Auditor General, Central Supply and Services, Corporate Policy Planning, edmonton telephones, Engineering, Finance, the Fiscal Policy Management Committee, the Office of the City Clerk, Planning, Real Estate and Supply Services, and Transportation.

Clubs/Entertainment Venues

This series consists of records of some of the clubs described above, but predominantly Club 70, The Imperial Sovereign Court of the Wild Rose (ISCWR) and The Roost Nightclub. There are early administrative records for Club 70, as well as newsletters and photographs. ISCWR records include Coronation programs and information from the first coronation in 1976, and then further programs and records from courts held from 1985 to 2009. There are numerous event and promotion files for The Roost Nightclub, including monthly event calendars, broadsheets and flyers, news clippings and event posters. Included with the records were Roost Nightclub plaques and trophies.

Resources and References

This series, the most extensive of the fonds, consists of the following sub-series: Bibliographies/Directories; Reports and Reference Texts; Articles and Clipping files; Conference information; and Periodicals. The periodicals include both local publications, as well as those published across Canada, in the United States, and elsewhere. For some of the serials, such as The Advocate and Times .10, there are many issues, while others may be represented by just a single issue or volume.
The clipping files, likewise, include some topics that are thick with clippings and articles (such as ‘Civil Rights-Equality Rights’, while others may consist of a single item. It is interesting to consider which subjects were deemed important enough or of broader interest to warrant creating a clipping and article file.
The Conference files provide information on conferences held locally, nationally and internationally, and often consist of promotional brochures, and related correspondence and printed information.
