Institutionele geschiedenis

Hilltop House was established in 1965 by Alberta Social Services to assist women who found themselves in trouble either because of their own addictions, or those of a spouse or other family members. The house provided shelter, food, clothing and counseling in life skills for up to 20 women at a time. Average stays were between one and two months long. Hilltop House originally opened at 9807 - 107 Street, and moved to 9910 - 103 Street (a former McDougall home) in the 1970's.
Hilltop House ceased operations in 1987.

Note: There were two houses in Edmonton referred to as 'Hilltop House'. One, at 9910 - 103 Street, is also called the McDougall Mansion. It is a designated heritage site built in 1912, and is currently the home of the Edmonton Community Foundation. The other, at 9807 - 107 Street, was the home of a women’s shelter which closed in 1987 (and pertains to the records in this fonds). The houses are not related in any way.
