John Wesley Fry was born in 1876 to Lydia Merner and John C. Fry in Woodstock, Ontario. He worked as a school-teacher and homesteaded in Saskatchewan.
He married Maria Battram and they had six children – Dora, Gladys, Ruth, Mildred, Clara, and John Henry. Gladys was a member of the Edmonton Grads basketball team.
The family moved to Edmonton in 1912, where John entered the contracting and real estate business. He was elected alderman in 1932, a position he held for five years. In 1937 he was elected Mayor of Edmonton. He was re-elected each of the next eight years before retiring in 1945 due to ill health.
John Wesley Fry died in 1946.
