Series 7 - Edmund Hugh Leger

Edmund Hugh Leger was born on July 28, 1916 in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. After completing his high school education, he moved to British Columbia and began work as a Special Constable for the B.C. Provincial Police. During the Second World War, Leger joined the Canadian Army and served in the Canadian Second Infantry and later the Provost Corps. as a special investigator. After the War ended, Leger left the Service and relocated to Alberta, where he became an immigration officer in Coutts, Alberta for the federal government. During his time in this position, Leger married Ida Wensman. Eventually, Leger became the special inquiry officer for Edmonton and Northern Alberta, a position he would maintain until he left the immigration service in 1958.

Leger bought the South Bend Motel and was the major shareholder of the Leger Wensman Holdings Co. Ltd., South Bend Management Ltd., Senator Properties Ltd., and Mayfair Investments Ltd. After discovering that Mayor Hawrelak wished to build a hotel across the street from Leger's, Leger began an investigation that forced the Government of Alberta to open its own investigation into the City's zoning practices. It was the publicity from this incident that began Leger's career in politics. Leger served as Alderman from 1959-1961, and from 1963-1986. After being defeated in his re-election bid in 1986, Leger retired from politics to focus on his business ventures.

Edmund Hugh Leger passed away on February 3, 1990 as a result of cancer. He was survived by his wife, Ida, and their five children.
