Biographical history

Arthur Osbourne Cload was born 23 May 1907 to Alice Maud Osborne and Ernest Cload in Plymouth, England. He immigrated to Canada in 1925 and settled in Edmonton. Arthur began Cload Auctions located in Market Square in downtown Edmonton (now Sir Winston Churchill Square).

In 1913, Arthur married Elsie Munton in Edmonton. They had three children – Diane, Joan, and D?

Arthur partnered with Robert O. Fenske in 1946, creating Cload and Fenske Auctions. In 1952 the business moved from Market Square to 10624 – 101 Street.

Arthur was an Oath Commissioner in Edmonton, a long time member of the Northern Alberta Pioneers' and Old Timers' Association (NAPOTA), and was awarded an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire).

Arthur Osbourne Cload died 7 Sep 1966 in Edmonton.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of materials created or collected by Arthur Cload of Edmonton and dating from ca. 1910-1987.This fonds consists of one small album of postcards, mainly of scenes in early 20th century Prairie Provinces. There are also typewritten copies of "Recollections of Arthur Osborne Cload", "My Own Story" which includes the memories of his youth, WWI, coming to Canada in 1925 under the British Empire settlement Scheme and "Recollections of Early Auctioneers" pertaining to Edmonton.

Immediate source of acquisition

This fonds was donated to the City of Edmonton Archives by Arthur Cload through the Northern Alberta Pioneers and Old Timers Association in 1983. Additional material was donated in 1994.

The photographs were assigned item numbers with the prefix EA-523.
