Biographical history
Arthur Edward Gagne was born October 11, 1897 in Ottawa, Ontario to Ann Mahoney and Francis Xavier Gagne. Art started his hockey career in Ottawa in 1916 in the Ottawa Senior Amateur Hockey League. He then played for the Quebec City Mountaineers, Laval University and the Sons of Ireland. Art moved west in 1920 to play for the Edmonton Eskimos in the Western Hockey League. His playing ability was reflected in the statistics (22 goals, 21 assists for total of 43 points in 29 games, 1922-23 season) and the nicknames given to him (‘Artful’ Arthur and ‘Cyclone’ Gagne).
In 1926, the Western Hockey League was sold to the National Hockey League (NHL) and Art was selected by the Montreal Canadiens. He played for the Canadiens for three years, of which 1927-28 was his best season (30 points in 44 games). He went to Boston at the start of the 1929-30 season but was traded to Ottawa in the second half of the season. In the off-season, Art worked for the Canadian National Railway (C.N.R.) in Kamloops, B.C.
Art ended his N.H.L. career in 1932 and the following year, returned west again to play in the Northwest Professional Hockey League with both the Edmonton Eskimos and the Seattle Seahawks. He retired from hockey in 1936, returned to Kamloops and continued to work for the C.N.R. He retired from railroad work in 1961.
He married Elizabeth Perletta (Pearl) Herbert (1896-1984) on 18 Oct 1921, in Ottawa, Ontario. They had four children, Keith (1923-2010), Lois (1924-2014), Art and Claire. Arthur Edward Gagne died 5 Oct 1988 in Kamloops, B.C.
