Bjarne's Books

Bjarne's Books was opened in 1982 with Jeanne Pizzuto as proprietor. Between 1982 and 2003, Bjarne's Books was situated on several locations on Whyte Avenue in Edmonton. Bjarne's Books specialises in second hand books and antiquarian materials. As of May 2003, Bjarne's Books was still operational and considered one of Edmonton's premiere book dealers.

Blatchford Field was the predecessor of the Edmonton Municipal Airport. It was established when then Mayor Kenneth Blatchford allotted $400.00 from the city's budget to appropriate and clear the field for a runway in 1926. Ottawa then recognised it as the first municipal airfield in Canada. A celebration was held in 1986 commemorating the 60th anniversary of the field.

The Florists Transworld Delivery Association (FTDA) began in 1910 as the Florists’ Telegraph Delivery Service in the United States and provided flower delivery service via telegraph. The FTDA changed its name to Florists’ Transworld Delivery Association in 1965 when they began to take international orders. The FTDA was a professional organization which promoted the floral business and encouraged the exchange among members of ideas, principles, policies and methods of conducting the retail floral business. The FTDA promoted the mutual exchange of orders among florists in the United States, Canada and other countries. Local florists have contributed to the administration of the organization as various board members of the international and regional executives. The FTDA was broken down into units, regions, and districts. The Edmonton based area of the FTDA was part of Alberta Unit, Region 11, District K. In late 1994 the FTD was divided into two entities, FTD Incorporated, a for profit corporation, and FTD Association, a non-profit trade association. While FTD Incorporated still controlled the FTD Association's rules and bylaws, the Association maintained their membership education and advocacy. In 2001, the FTD Association was completely separated from FTD Incorporated and all contracts were terminated. In exchange the FTD Association received $14 million and was later renamed Retail Florist Association. The FTD Incorporated continues to operate as an international flower delivery service, separate from the Association.

The Beverly Women's Franchise Club was formed in 1917 to help the women of Beverly (then a town to the north east of Edmonton - now a neighbourhood of the city) educate themselves about civic and provincial politics. It had speakers and arranged social and charitable events to raise funds for community causes. The club ceased operations some point after 1937.

McEachern, Grace Martin

Grace Martin was born in Quincy, North Dakota in 1879, the eldest of eleven children of David and Margaret Martin. The Martin family moved to South Edmonton in 1899 where they purchased 320 acres of land.
Grace Martin was the first teacher at Oliver School, which was the first school in the Ellerslie district.
In 1903 Grace taught school in Leduc where Donald C. McEachern was principal. Grace Martin and David McEachern were married in 1904 in Strathcona.
In 1972, the Edmonton Public School Board opened the Grace Martin Elementary School in the neighbourhood of Millwoods in her honour. Grace was the guest of honour at the opening and five of her former pupils were able to attend.
Grace Martin McEachern died in 1988.

Baird, Georgia

Georgia Baird came to Edmonton in 1960 and worked with the English Department of the University of Alberta. She also worked with the Society for the Retired and Semi-Retired where she established the Heritage Program in 1974 which linked seniors with school classes for the exchange of historical information, and ran the Heritage Library there. Mrs. Baird was appointed to the Edmonton Historical Board in 1978 and served as Chair of that body. She is also a volunteer at the City of Edmonton Archives. With her husband, Richard, a professor of political science at the University of Alberta, Georgia Baird has a keen interest in theatre in the city.

MacLean Evans, Una

Una MacLean was born on March 11th, 1926 in Sunnybrook, Alberta. After completing high school in Calgary, she joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in 1944 and served eighteen months at the National Defense Headquarters in Ottawa. After her service, she studied arts at the University of Manitoba and then relocated to Calgary in 1951 where she worked as Assistant Secretary for the Calgary Chamber of Commerce.

Her political career began in 1952 as Secretary of the Southern Branch of the Alberta Liberal Association. She unsuccessfully contested the Federal election in Calgary North against Doug Harkness and then worked at the Glenbow Foundation as a research historian specializing in Alberta’s political history.

In April 1962, she married Arthur Evans, a prominent Edmonton journalist, and moved to Edmonton. The couple had three children together, two sons and one daughter.

Una McLean Evans served as an Alderman from October 1966 to 1974, being reelected in 1968 and 1971. After her civic terms, she was named as a citizenship judge which she continued for eight years.

Una MacLean Evans died on February 24th, 2015 at the age of 88 and is buried in Beechmount Cemetery in Edmonton, Alberta.

Edmonton Flyers

Sponsored by the Edmonton Exhibition Association, the Edmonton Flyers played hockey in Edmonton from 1942-1963. Until 1952 they were an amateur team and in 1948 they won the Allan Cup, "the symbol of amateur hockey supremacy" in Canada. After 1952 the Flyers were the senior hockey league farm team of the Detroit Red Wings and members of the Western Canada Hockey League. The Western Canada Hockey League played against the Quebec League for the Duke of Edinburgh Trophy. The Edmonton Flyers won the Trophy in 1953 and made the finals in 1954 and 1955. In 1958 the Exhibition Association leased the team to the Detroit Hockey Club, an arrangement that lasted until 1963 when the Detroit Club withdrew sponsorship.

Cashman, Tony

Tony Cashman was born April 28, 1923 in Edmonton Alberta. After living in California for a short time, the family returned to Edmonton and Mr. Cashman was educated at Grandin and St. Joseph's High School. He served in the Second World War from 1942-1945 before studying for three years at Notre Dame University in South Bend Indiana. After returning to Edmonton in 1949, Mr. Cashman worked at a variety of media positions, including station manager of the CKUA radio, reporter for the Edmonton Journal, and historian and curator of the Alberta Government Telephones Museum. Tony Cashman is a local storyteller, journalist, broadcaster and author. He has written several books, including "The Edmonton Story", "More Edmonton Stories" and "Singing Wires". Tony Cashman married Genevieve Mary Costello in August 1950. The Cashmans had three sons: Hal, Bernard, and Paul.

Kirkpatrick, E. E.

Elmer Ellsworth Kirkpatrick Jr. was born in Yukon, Oklahoma in 1905 to Dr. Elmer E. Kirkpatrick and Helene Claudia (Spencer) Kirkpatrick. He entered the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1925. He graduated on 13 June 1929 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps. Two days after graduation he married Edith Luise Koelsch. He enrolled in the Carnegie Institute of Technology on 9 June 1931 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering the following year.

In 1940 he came to work in the office of the Quartermaster General of the US Army, he was promoted to Major on 10 October 1942 and Lieutenant Colonel on 1 February 1942. On 19 February 1942 he was transferred to the Army Corps of Engineers. In March 1943 he became chief of staff of the Northwest Service Command and came to Edmonton to serve as deputy to General Worsham of the Engineers Division of the United States Army. He later became Chief of Staff of the North West Service Command when it was combined with the Engineers Division. He spent the summer of 1944 as Commander in Whitehorse. His work and that of the American Army Engineers on the Alaska Highway had a significant impact on Edmonton during the war years. He returned to Washington, DC in September 1944. He retired from the Army on November 1, 1958 with the rank of colonel.

Col. Kirkpatrick died 26 March 1990 in Jacksonville, Florida.
