Ken Tingley was born in Moncton, New Brunswick but raised and educated in Edmonton. He attained both a B.A. and an M.A. in History from the University of Alberta. Ken has pursued his interest in Western Canadian and local history by serving on the Edmonton Historical Board, the Edmonton Chapter of the Historical Society of Alberta, the Old Strathcona Foundation and the Museums Alberta Editorial Board. Ken has been a Research Associate at the Provincial Museum of Alberta and is an Historic Resource Consultant and Researcher. He is a principal member of PMA Group Inc. which deals with architectural consulting. Thompson, Jeane Alberta Ross

Jeane Alberta Ross was born in 1914 to Winnifred Thompson and Harold O. Ross in Edmonton. When her father went to war in 1916, Jeane and her mother moved to Bracebridge, Ontario. After her father’s death in May 1917, they returned to Alberta settling on a farm in Millet, with Jean’s uncles Wilfred and Keith.

Jeane started elementary school in Millet in 1921, and later attended Strathcona High School. She went to the Normal School in Edmonton and then taught at the Coal Lake School for one year. Jeane then went to the University of Alberta and received a degree in Commerce. She worked for the Alberta Wheat Pool in Calgary and the Examinations Branch in the Department of Education in Edmonton.

Prior to World War II, Jeane went east, likely to Ontario. While there, Jeane married Capt. V.A. Thompson and they had one son, John. After World War II, Jeane and her son returned to Millet. They lived on the Ross-Thompson farm and Jeane remained on the farm until it was sold in 1967.

Jeane was very active in the Millet community, including the Millet Red Cross, Millet Library Board and the United Farm Women’s Association. Jeane was also involved with other organizations, including the Federation of Alberta Naturalists, The Human Society, Friends of the Devonian Botanical Gardens, and the Historical Society of Alberta.

Jeane Ross Thompson died 24 Jan 1977 in Millet, Alberta.

Thompson, Hector

Hector Harry Thompson was born 5 Aug 1884 to Zelia Taylor and George Thompson in Germania, Ontario. Hector was the third oldest of eight children, and older brother to Winnifred Ross Thompson.

As a young man he worked for his father as a farm labourer and on his own in wood lumber. In summers he would work with horses. Around 1918 he travelled west to join his siblings, Wilfred, Keith, and Winnifred who had established the Ross-Thompson farm in Millet.

Hector also worked the horses for Helen Furlong, another famer in the Millet area. Later, Hector purchased a farm adjacent to the Ross-Thompson farm. He was known to always keep a diary, which was reported as ‘solving many arguments’.

Hector Harry Thompson died 19 Aug 1967 in Millet.

Norman Llewellyn Terwillegar was born 26 Sep 1883 to Catherine Walter and Archibald Terwillegar in East Whitby, Ontario. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1909 and interned at the New Haven State Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. Following the completion of his intership, Dr. Norman L. Terwillegar returned briefly to Ontario in 1911, but sometime that year moved to western Canada and began a practice in Tofield, Alberta.

In 1912 he joined the surgical staff at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. Sometime between 1912 and 1914, Norman married. He and he wife, Dorothy, had three children, Norman Allin (1915-1943), Catherine Elizabeth (1918-?) and William Robert (1920-1944).

Norman and Dorothy's first son, Norman Allin, also became a surgeon. He enlisted in the Navy in 1940 becoming a Surgeon Lieutenant. He served on several ships that saw some of the heaviest battles in the Mediterranean while evacuating casualties. Dr. Norman A. Terwillegar was killed in action in 1943 when the ship he was on was attacked and sank in the Italian Harbour during the early days of the invasion of Italy. He was presumed missing, lost at sea, at the age of 28 years.

Norman and Dorothy's daughter, Catherine, married Robert Folinsbee and lived in Edmonton. Their third child, William Robert, died in 1944 at the age of 22 yrs.

Dr. Norman L. Terwillegar was associated with the Royal Alexandra Hospital for his entire career, but also had a private practice, initially with offices in the Tegler building and later from his home in the Westmount neighbourhood. He was widely respected throughout Edmonton for his devotion to his patients, both at the hospital and in private practice. At various times, he served as President of the Edmonton Academy of Medicine and the Alberta Medical Society.

Dr. Norman L. Terwillegar died 31 Aug 1948 in Edmonton. Dorothy Terwillegar died 27 Oct 1962. They are buried in the Edmonton Cemetery.

Dr. Terwilligar's home in Westmount (10727 - 125 Street), where the family lived from 1920 to 1959, is considered to be a fine example of the Craftsman style of architecture. The residence is on the Alberta Register of Historic Places (provincial and municipal) and has received several historic awards, including an Edmonton Historical Board Plaque award.

To honour Dr. Terwilligar's good character and influence, the City of Edmonton named a southwestern community Terwillegar Heights in the 1960s.

Ternon, Nora Stinson

Nora May Stinson was born 10 May 1914 in Edmonton to James Stinson and Beatrice Moore. The family lived at 113 Avenue and 124 Street.
Nora married John B. Ternon in Toronto in 1942. The couple lived in Toronto but returned to Edmonton in the early 1960s. They lived with Nora’s parents in the home of her childhood and Nora worked as a bookkeeper.
Nora Stinson Ternon died 25 Apr 1993 in Edmonton.

Taylor, Iain C.

Iain C. Taylor was born May 25, 1943. He was educated at the universities of Leeds (B.A. Hons., 1964), Toronto (M.A., 1966) and Liverpool (Ph.D., 1976) as a geographer, specializing in urban studies. While studying, he worked for the Ontario government, University Of Toronto and Seneca College, the University of Liverpool and Open University in England. In 1973, he became an original member of the faculty of Athabasca University when it was created as an institutional primarily focused on distance education.

Iain Taylor was involved in a number of community and political groups in Edmonton AB, including the Cromdale Community League (1974-1978), Action Edmonton, an community advocacy group on the design and construction of the Commonwealth Games stadium (1974-1976), a member of the Mayor's ad hoc Commonwealth Games Stadium Committee (1974-ca. 1979); and the Urban Reform Group Edmonton (URGE), a civic political party (Board member, 1976-1978, 1980-1981, President, 1977-1978). He ran unsuccessfully as an URGE candidate for alderman in 1980.

From 1991-1996, he was Chief Geographer, National Atlas of Canada (later Geomatics Canada) and Manager Conservation Programs, Atlantic Canada region, Environment Canada, 1996-1999. From 1995, he has been a land use and heritage property consultant, operating under the firm, North by Northwest, in Halifax NS.
