Williamson, Samuel W. 1872-1953

Samuel Williamson was born in 1872 to Janet Dougals and Joseph Williamson in Fenelon, Victoria County, Ontario. In 1894 Samuel married Minnie Huston in Windsor, Ontario. Samuel and Minnie had two daughters – Margaret and Marian. In the early 1900’s, the family moved west to Edmonton, where three more children were born – Jean, Helen, and Paul.

Samuel, with his brother Robert who had also moved to Edmonton, formed the Williamson Brothers. They initially were in the cattle business, both wholesale and retail. In the 1910’s the Williamson brothers went into real estate. In 1914 the Williamson Building was built at 9815 Jasper Avenue on the south side of Jasper Avenue, opposite the then Fraser Avenue (98 Street). The building was demolished in the 1960’s to make way for the Edmonton Convention Centre.

Samuel Williamson served as an Alderman on Edmonton City Council in 1914. Samuel joined the Alberta Provincial government as a clerk in the Municipal Affairs Department in 1918. He retired in 1937.

Samuel Willaimson died 28 May 1953 in Edmonton.

Samuel and Minnie’s first child, Margaret Williamson was born 24 Mar 1896 in Victoria County, Ontario. As the family had moved west in the early 1900’s, they were in Edmonton for the inauguration of Alberta as a province in 1905. Margaret participated in the Children’s Parade of the Inauguration Ceremonies.

Margaret married Aaron J. Mann in 1917 in Edmonton. They had eight children – Aaron W., Katharine, Donald, Violet, Dennis, Laura, Lewis, and Phyllis.

Margaret Williamson Mann died 29 Oct 1983 in Edmonton.

John Kenneth Macdonald was born 24 Jul 1874 to Mary Ann Ketchum and Donald Macdonald in Drayton, Wellington County, Ontario. He attended schools in Cobourg, Ontario. In 1884 he came to western Canada following his father, who had moved to Manitoba two years earlier. He remained in Western Canada for a few years but returned to Ontario to complete his schooling and study law. He returned west in 1892, and came to Edmonton in 1893.

John was with the editorial staff at the Edmonton Bulletin for a time, and was an active in the Edmonton amateur theatre scene in the late 1890's and early 1900's. He was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1903. John was Assistant Deputy Attorney-General of Alberta from 1904 to 1906, after which he entered into private practice.

Therese Fraser Holland was born in 1882 to Selina Fraser and Henry F. Holland in Cobourg, Ontario. Therese graduated in nursing from the Hospital for Sick Chiildren.

John Kenneth Macdonald and Therese Fraser Holland were married 1 Jan 1912 in Cobourg, Ontario. The couple returned to Edmonton and they had three children - Alan Fraser, Lorna Louise, and Bruce Fraser. Therese was very involved in the Victorian Order of Nurses in Edmonton. John continued in his private law practice, was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, and involved in other community organizations.

MacAllister, Mary Stewart Moroney 1913-1998

Gault Alexander MacAllister was born in 1916 in Lachute, Quebec to Gertrude Clarke and Walt MacAllister. Gault MacAllister received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Alberta and became a professional agrologist. In 1946 he was employed by the Alberta Department of Agriculture, where he worked in close association with the Alberta dairy industry. He became supervisor of the Dairy Plant Inspection office in the Department of Agriculture in 1963 and retired in 1976.

Mary Stewart Moroney was born in 1913 to Maude Lauder and Frederick Moroney
Her mother’s parents (James Lauder and Hannah Gray) were a pioneering family in Edmonton. Mary worked as a teacher and educator, and later volunteered at the City of Edmonton Archives.

Mary Moroney and Gault MacAllister married in Edmonton in 1941. They had two children.
Gault Alexander MacAllister died in 1984. His wife, Mary Stewart Moroney MacAllister, died in 1998. They are buried in the Westakiwin Cemetery in Wetaskiwin, Alberta.

Louis Garneau was born 21 Aug 1872 to Eleanor Thomas and Laurent Garneau in Manitoba. He married Elizabeth (Betsy) Lavallee and they had seven children – Louis, Millie, Rose, Agnes, Malvine, Helena, and Irene. Louis Garneau died 17 Jan 1954 in St. Paul, Alberta.

Helen Learmonth was born in Edmonton in 1904 and continued as a resident along with her husband, Charles for many years. Helen was the daughter of the Rev. David George McQueen who became the first Moderator of Edmonton Presbytery in 1906. Helen joined the Northern Alberta Pioneers and Old-Timers' Association in 1924 and was a member of the City of Edmonton Archives and Landmarks Committee in the sixties.

James Lauder was born in Scotland on March 26, 1843. In 1874 James and his wife Hannah Lauder (neé Gray), along with their then three children, immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba. A few years later on May 30th, 1881, the family relocated to Edmonton, Alberta. The journey to Edmonton took the family three and half months and they arrived on September 15th, 1881. James and Hannah had 11 children together including Isabella, James (Jr.), Norman, Alec, Jennie, Annie, Margaret, Maude, Clara, and Thomas. Their oldest daughter passed away before they immigrated to Canada.

James was a Scottish baker by trade and in November 1885 he opened the first bakery and confectionery in Edmonton near 98 Street. The bakery served bread to the North West Mounted Police at Fort Saskatchewan, which was delivered to the Fort by horse and wagon. In 1897 James had a stroke and sold his bakery to Hallier & Aldridge around 1900. James died at the age of 81 on March 6, 1924. Hannah passed away on January 10th, 1910 from a serious illness.

James and Hannah’s eldest son Thomas Gray Lauder went on to become Edmonton’s first fire chief and their daughter, Jennie, was Edmonton’s first telephone operator. Jennie later married William Griesbach. Thomas Lauder married Sarah Chandler and together they had 2 sons and 3 daughters, Adaline Lauder, Norine Janet Lauder, Marie Lauder, Arthur James Gray Lauder, and Lewis Reade Lauder. Lewis worked for Canadian National Express for 37 years. Arthur was an Edmonton fire chief and married to Marion Lauder, a piano teacher.

Norine Lauder, the last surviving member of her siblings, passed away in 1983. James’ and Thomas’ homestead was located in the area now known as Lauderdale, named after James and his family.

David Gilliland Latta was born 11 Nov 1869 to Elizabeth Lockhart and Alexander Latta in County Wexford, Ireland. He arrived in Canada in 1888. He worked as a lumberman in eastern Canada, served a three-year term with the North West Mounted Police and operated a sheep ranch before moving to Edmonton in 1897. David Latta started his own blacksmith and carriage shop and was later joined by John H. Lyons to form the company of Latta and Lyons, 1906-1912. He then established D.G. Latta, Limited, which he operated until his death in 1948.

Around 1896, David G. Latta married Jessie Scott Wuttanee and they had two daughters Elizabeth Hazel and Jessie. Jessie Wuttannee Latta died in childbirth in 1899. She is buried in the Edmonton Municipal Cemetery. Later that year, David G. Latta married Emily Decoteau in Edmonton. David and Emily would have eight children – David, Eva, Alexander (Sr.), Katharine, William, Ernest, Walter and Ruth. There were three other children who died as infants.

David G. Latta was elected to Edmonton's second city council, where he served one term.
David G. Latta died 11 Nov 1948 in Edmonton. Emily Decouteau Latta died 27 Mar 1955 in Red Deer. They are buried at the Edmonton Municipal Cemetery.

The Latta Bridge at 91 Street and Jasper Avenue was named in honour of David G. Latta.
