Blyth, Alfred

Alfred "Alf" Blyth was born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1901. Along with his widowed mother and siblings, Alfred relocated to Edmonton, Alberta in 1913. In 1916 Alfred became a darkroom technician for photographers Percy C. Byron and Gustave May at Byron and May Co. In the following year Byron and May Co. was bought by McDermid Studios in Edmonton. Alfred continued to work for the studio until 1928 when he opened his own studio, Alfred Blyth Studios. He worked and operated his studio until his retirement in 1970. Throughout his career Alfred also worked for various newspapers including the Edmonton Journal and Edmonton Bulletin shooting commercial and news photography.
Alfred was the official photographer for several Alberta events and occasions including the Edmonton Exhibition, the Calgary Stampede, and Royal Visits in 1939, 1951, and 1959. Alfred shot the first session of the Alberta Legislature for the Aberhart administration and newsreel for Fox Movietone News. He won multiple awards as a photographer both internationally and locally including the Performing and Creative Arts award by the City of Edmonton in 1974 and the Alberta Achievement Award in 1976. His hobbies included tennis, golf, hunting, and bowling. Alfred passed away in 1980 at the age of 79.

Bolstad, Allan

After 13 years as a journalist for the Edmonton Sun and the Edmonton Examiner, Allan Boldstad decided to run for municipal office. He was first elected as a Councillor for Ward 2 in 1992, and was subsequently reelected until he chose to leave politics in 2004.

Booth, John

John Booth was born in Scotland, ca. 1890 and immigrated to Canada, ca. 1911, moving to Edmonton in 1913. He joined the Edmonton Fire Department in 1914 and retired in 1955. He was Edmonton’s first Fire Marshal.
John Booth died on 25 Jan 1977.

Bordessa, Bernard C.

Bernard C. Bordessa was born July 29, 1887. At the age of 25 he immigrated to Canada and was employed with the CNR in Vancouver. From 1915-1919, he served in Europe with the Vancouver based Irish Fusiliers. Upon discharge, Mr. Bordessa returned to Vancouver and resumed work as an engineer with a variety of comapnies and on several different projects. In 1927, he married Dorothy Denison. A long time member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists, Mr. Bordessa was the oldest living member at the time of his passing in 1991 . At the time of his death members of the Association compiled biographical material so that the record of his contributions would not be lost.

Botz, James H.

James H. Botz was born in 1892 in Michigan, U.S.A. He came to Edmonton in 1911. James lived at 557 Vermillion Ave and worked as a bookkeeper at the Sommerville Hardware Company Ltd. By 1913, he was no longer in Edmonton and had returned to the States. James H. Botz died in 1971 and is buried at the Edgewater New Smyrna Cemetery in Florida.

Bradley, Myrtle

Myrtle Bradley was born in the U.S.A. ca. 1874. She married Charles Bradley and they had two children, Donald born in 1894 and Dorris born in 1901. Charles was the manager of the Swift Plant in Cleveland, Ohio. The family immigrated to Canada in 1908 when Charles became the manager of the J.Y Griffin & Co. meat packing plant (later known as Swift’s). Their first residence was at 539 – 8th Avenue. Another daughter, Louise, was born in 1912.
Charles Bradley was considered a prominent businessman in Edmonton and remained as general manager of the Swift Canadian Co. until his death in July 1924. He had left his home in Edmonton to visit the family farm in Winterburn on Tuesday July 2, 1924 and seemed to have disappeared. He was reported missing and a search was started. The following day his car was spotted west of the city and his body was found nearby. His death was ruled an accident due to heatstroke caused by an intense heat wave that began July 1st, 1924. It was reported that temperatures reached 35C (96F) breaking all previous records.
Myrtle Bradley died in March 1971 and is buried in the Edmonton Cemetery.
